The Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services, including VPN access, in five districts for an additional two days amid ongoing ethnic tensions.
The restrictions follow a recent escalation in violence, where two people were killed and 29 others injured after security forces reportedly opened fire on a mob in Bishnupur district. The mob had gathered to protest the deaths of two children—a five-year-old boy and his six-month-old sister—in an explosion.
In response to the unrest, authorities imposed curfew measures across several districts. While limited relaxation was allowed for a few hours on Sunday, tensions remain high in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur.
Officials stated that the extension of the internet ban was necessary to prevent the spread of misinformation and rumours through social media platforms, which could potentially incite further violence or damage to property. They also noted challenges in effectively monitoring mobile data usage during such volatile situations.
Although broadband services, including leased lines and fiber connections, were partially restored under strict conditions, mobile internet services continue to remain suspended.
Since May 2023, ethnic violence in Manipur has claimed over 260 lives and displaced nearly 60,000 people. The conflict, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has deeply divided the state, with communities retreating into their respective regions.
The government said the decision to continue restrictions was taken after reviewing the law and order situation and assessing the need for preventive measures to maintain public safety.
