Islamabad: April 18, 2026
The next round of talks between the United States and Iran is expected to begin in Pakistan this weekend, with delegations set to arrive ahead of formal negotiations scheduled for Monday, Iranian sources told CNN. The planned meeting marks a potential revival of direct engagement after months of stalled diplomacy. However, the US has not yet confirmed that the talks are scheduled, leaving uncertainty over the format and agenda. Pakistan’s role as host reflects its history of serving as a discreet channel between Washington and Tehran on regional security matters.
Despite movement toward the next round of talks, wide gaps remain between the two sides. US President Donald Trump said Friday he was confident the countries were close to a deal, hinting at progress on key demands. A senior Iranian official disputed that view, casting doubt on Trump’s claims that Tehran had already made significant concessions. Core disputes persist over the sequencing of sanctions relief, limits on Iran’s nuclear program, and Tehran’s regional activities, with both governments facing domestic pressure not to appear to compromise.
Maritime security in the Persian Gulf continues to weigh on the negotiations. Only a handful of commercial vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, despite Iran’s foreign minister insisting the waterway was open to shipping. The subdued traffic reflects lingering caution among shippers after weeks of military posturing. Iran’s parliament speaker warned the strait could be closed again if the United States does not lift what he called a naval blockade in the region. The strait carries nearly a fifth of global oil, making stability there a priority for both sides.
The next round of talks is also unfolding under the shadow of the Israel-Hezbollah truce in Lebanon. A 10-day ceasefire has largely held, though Lebanon has accused Israel of several violations. The conflict remains a flashpoint in the US-Iran dialogue, with Washington urging Tehran to restrain Hezbollah while Iran seeks guarantees that Israel will abide by the truce. Developments on the Lebanon front are likely to influence the atmosphere when delegations meet in Islamabad.
Expectations for the next round of talks remain mixed. The US is seeking commitments on nuclear compliance and regional de-escalation, while Iran wants sanctions relief and assurances against renewed economic pressure. The Strait of Hormuz and the Lebanon ceasefire have become immediate tests of intent for both parties. Whether Monday’s session yields progress or stalls again may hinge on back-channel contacts over the weekend before formal discussions start.
