The Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation Manipur, Tamenglong Luangrian (RNYOM-TL), died in a road accident on Friday afternoon when their vehicle skidded off National Highway-137 and fell into a deep gorge. The incident occurred between Azuram village and the Makru River under Tousem Sub-Division in Tamenglong District, Manipur. The victims were identified as Miusinreiyang Panmei, Chairman of RNYOM-TL, and Joy Panmei, Vice Chairman of the organisation.

According to initial reports, the two leaders were travelling to Assam in a Gypsy along with three other occupants when the driver lost control of the vehicle on the mountainous stretch of NH-137. The Gypsy veered off the highway and tumbled into a steep gorge, resulting in the deaths of both senior RNYOM-TL leaders at the scene. The three other occupants sustained injuries of varying degrees and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Their current condition has not been disclosed by authorities.

The sudden deaths of Miusinreiyang Panmei and Joy Panmei have sent shockwaves through the Rongmei community and civil society groups across Manipur. Both leaders were widely regarded as committed and selfless figures who worked extensively for the welfare of the Rongmei people and tribal communities in the state. They were actively involved in youth mobilisation, cultural preservation, and advocacy for community issues in Tamenglong Luangrian, one of the key Rongmei-inhabited regions in Manipur.

Condolence messages began pouring in soon after news of the accident spread. The Tribal Youths Council Manipur, Council Headquarters (TYCM-CHQ), expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of the two leaders, stating that their dedication to public service and the tribal cause would be remembered. TYCM-CHQ also extended prayers for the speedy and complete recovery of the three injured occupants. Local organisations in Tamenglong have called for improved road safety measures along NH-137, a route known for sharp curves and landslide-prone stretches that has witnessed several fatal accidents in recent years.
