Two persons from the Tangkhul Kacha-Naga community were killed on Friday in an alleged ambush at TM Kasom in Ukhrul district, after suspected NSCN-Eastern Flank cadres reportedly opened fire on their vehicle.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:35 PM on 18 April 2026 along the busy MT Kasom–Imphal route, leaving five vehicles damaged. According to local accounts, the cadres mistook the civilian vehicle for one carrying Kukis. The occupants, however, were Tangkhul Kacha-Naga.

The deceased have been identified as Chinaoshang Shokwungnao of Tashar Village, a retired personnel of the Naga Regiment, and Yaruingam Vashum, 43, of Kharasom CV village. Both were reported to be innocent travellers who were passing through the area when the firing took place.

Representatives of the Kuki community have clarified that Kukis had no involvement in the incident. However, some media outlets associated with the Meitei and Tangkhul communities have blamed Kukis for the ambush, a claim that remains unverified.

Security forces have launched an investigation into the incident. While the perpetrators remain officially unidentified and no group has claimed responsibility, authorities confirmed that additional deployments have been made in the area to prevent further violence.
