The Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, has accused NSCN (EF) cadres of launching a pre-dawn attack on Kuki villages in the Tongou pocket of the Kampa range on May 4, 2026, despite ongoing ceasefire overtures by Naga church leaders in Nagaland. The committee said the incident reflects “calculated audacity of the highest order” and undermines peace efforts in the region.

According to the statement issued by the Department of Information and Media, NSCN (EF) militants attempted a forceful intrusion at approximately 3:00 AM, opening indiscriminate fire near the Uliliphoi-Bollen ridge of Mt. Kampa. Kuki village volunteers retaliated in self-defence, with the exchange leaving one volunteer critically injured. The area borders Chepu Yaolen, Lamlai Chingphei, Shongphel, Mulam, and Tongou Tangkhul Village, and falls within the jurisdiction of Kuki settlements.
The committee alleged that the attack occurred while Kuki CSO leaders were travelling to honour the proposed ceasefire, describing the timing as a “deeply troubling reality.” It questioned whether any peace initiative can retain credibility in the face of such “duplicity,” given that civilians were targeted while leaders demonstrated restraint.
More serious concerns were raised over reports that NSCN (EF) approached security forces at Sinaikhethel seeking a three-day window of non-intervention to carry out the elimination of Kukis in Ukhrul. The committee called the proposition “reprehensible” and asked whether it had been entertained by authorities.
Citing a “deliberate campaign to destabilize, intimidate, and sabotage peace efforts,” the Kuki CSO demanded immediate combing operations across the Tongou-Ringui belt to neutralize hostile elements and prevent further incursions into forest and farming areas. It stressed that peace cannot be a rhetorical exercise while violence continues.
Addressed to the Chief Minister of Manipur, the DGP, and the Superintendent of Police, Ukhrul, the statement concluded that the moment demands “resolute, impartial, and unequivocal action.” The committee said it issued the appeal to ensure the safety of civilians and uphold the integrity of ongoing peace discussions.
