Songpi, June 18, 2026: Women from Henglep Sub-Divisional Headquarters held a protest today outside the camp of central security forces, voicing anger over what they called atrocities against local civilians. The demonstration was triggered by the alleged killing of Lenminsang Haokip by central forces on Monday evening, an incident protesters described as inhumane and unjustified.
Gathered in front of the camp currently stationed at the Henglep Girls’ Hostel, the womenfolks raised slogans condemning the violence. Placards and chants carried a clear message: the community seeks safety and protection from those deployed in the area, not intimidation or harm. The choice of location underscored local unease about forces occupying civilian infrastructure.
Protesters said the death of Lenminsang has deepened fear among residents who already feel vulnerable amid ongoing tensions in Manipur. “We are not asking for favours. We are asking for the right to live without harassment,” one protester said during the demonstration. The slogans echoed across the sub-divisional headquarters as more women joined through the morning.
The demonstration remained peaceful but firm, with women blocking the approach to the camp for several hours. They demanded accountability for the killing and an immediate review of how security operations are conducted in civilian areas of Henglep.
Local leaders present at the site said they would submit a memorandum to district authorities, seeking an independent probe into the incident and the relocation of forces from the girls’ hostel. The protest dispersed later in the day, but organizers vowed to continue pressing their demands until civilian safety is guaranteed.
