Songpi: May 24, 2026A live televised debate on Manipur’s ethnic tensions drew sharp attention after Tangkhul panelist Julia Singlai made several remarks openly directed against the Kuki community.

Speaking on a local news channel, Singlai said: “Let’s go for a final showdown with Kukis. If they win, let them rule Manipur. If we win, let us rule. This time, under any circumstances, let there be no compromise.”
In the same broadcast, she called for an end to government compensation for victims. “Let’s stop the policy of ex-gratia to the victims,” Singlai said, claiming that “the majority of my people will want my suggestion of a final showdown.”
The remarks were aired unedited and have since circulated widely on social media. The confrontation-driven language portrayed the conflict not as a matter for dialogue, but as a battle for domination.
Such statements, broadcast publicly, reflect how deeply anti-Kuki hostility and exclusionary rhetoric have entered sections of political discourse. Framing one community as an adversary to be defeated risks inflaming tensions and encouraging further communal polarization.
At a time when Manipur remains fragile and violence-affected, public figures using media platforms to spread confrontation-based narratives instead of peace and constitutional dialogue raise serious concerns about the normalization of hate-driven rhetoric against the Kuki community.
