Fourteen Kuki hostages held in Senapati District were released following several days of captivity, community sources confirmed. The move has been welcomed by civil society groups as a potential step toward de-escalation in Manipur.
According to reports, the 14 individuals had been held under the custody of the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) and associated groups. Details of their condition after release were not immediately available, but no further casualties were reported.
The release comes against the backdrop of a recent incident in Ukhrul District, where 18 Tangkhul hostages were freed by Kuki groups. However, two of those Kuki individuals were subsequently killed, an incident that sparked concern and criticism across communities.
Questions remain over the circumstances surrounding the earlier killings in Ukhrul and the broader pattern of hostage-taking in the region. Both incidents have intensified scrutiny of civilian safety amid ongoing inter-community tensions.
Community leaders and civil society organizations have renewed calls for an immediate end to hostage-taking. Groups urged all parties to protect civilians and uphold commitments made during past peace efforts.
Kuki bodies have cited security gaps and recurring violence as key concerns, while appeals for restraint have come from multiple forums. The SDSA has not issued a detailed public statement on the release at the time of reporting.
Authorities are yet to confirm whether investigations into the Ukhrul killings and Senapati captivity are underway. Leaders across communities continue to press for dialogue, accountability, and measures to restore trust and peace.
