The Village Volunteers Eastern Zone (VVEZ) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Tangkhul Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and allied armed groups, demanding an immediate end to what it calls a “strict economic embargo” imposed on the Kuki population in Kamjong District.

In a strongly worded statement released today under the banner of Northeast Frontier Affairs, VVEZ said the blockade has triggered a deepening humanitarian crisis, cutting off access to essential commodities, basic necessities, and medical facilities for Kuki civilians.

According to VVEZ, the embargo has been in effect for nearly two months. The group alleges that the Tangkhul community has enforced restrictions on the movement of Kuki civilians outside their villages, including denying them access to medical facilities at the Kamjong District Headquarters.

“The Village Volunteer Eastern Zone has been closely monitoring the volatile situation in Kamjong and Ukhrul districts following a targeted campaign by Tangkhul Civil Society Organizations and allied armed militants against the Kuki community,” the statement read.

Despite what it described as “repeated attacks on Kuki villages,” VVEZ stated it has maintained “maximum restraint to prevent the escalation of a new ethnic conflict” amidst the ongoing Kuki-Meitei crisis in Manipur.

Calling the actions a “severe violation of fundamental human rights within a democratic society,” VVEZ has demanded that all blockades, movement restrictions, and hostile measures be lifted within 24 hours.

“Failure to comply will result in consequences for which the Tangkhul CSOs and their armed militants will be held solely responsible,” the statement warned.

The embargo comes amid heightened ethnic tensions in Manipur, where inter-community relations have remained fragile since violence erupted in May 2023.

The statement was released by the Information & Publicity wing of the Village Volunteers Eastern Zone (VVEZ), Kukiland.
