At least 731 internally displaced persons have died in Manipur’s relief camps and pre-fabricated housing since violence erupted in May 2023, according to state home department data released under the RTI Act on Friday. The disclosure followed a Manipur Information Commission directive in Appeal Case No. 22 of 2026.

District-wise figures show Churachandpur recorded 248 deaths, the highest among nine districts. Bishnupur reported 151, Kangpokpi 128, Imphal West 94, Kakching 60, Imphal East 25, Jiribam 13, Thoubal 11, and Tengnoupal one.

Over 43,000 people remain displaced across the state as of April 30 this year. Kangpokpi houses the largest camp population at 15,694, followed by Bishnupur with 10,092 and Churachandpur with 6,365.

Authorities also logged 25 unnatural deaths in camps. Churachandpur reported six cases, including four drownings, one electrocution, and one sexual assault where the accused was arrested. Imphal West reported four unnatural deaths from hanging, overdose, and a bullet injury.

Health conditions remain critical. Imphal East has 217 inmates with terminal or incurable illnesses, Imphal West 41, and Bishnupur 26. District administrations said medical treatment, counselling, wheelchairs, air mattresses, and surgery funding have been provided.

The RTI reply to writer and political activist Hareshwar Goshwami marks one of the most detailed official accounts of the humanitarian toll from Manipur’s ongoing displacement crisis.
