Songpi July 31, 2026: The flood situation remained critical in the Northeast on Thursday with the combined death toll in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh rising to 81, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured central support to the affected states.
In Assam, three more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours — two in Sivasagar and one in Golaghat — taking the state’s toll this monsoon to 78, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority. Over 3,00,031 people continue to be affected across seven districts, with Charaideo remaining the worst-hit with 1,37,561 affected, followed by Sivasagar and Jorhat. More than 16,500 people are sheltered in 71 relief camps.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the unprecedented flooding in Upper Assam was triggered by a cloudburst in Nagaland’s Mon district on July 19, which brought 435 to 493 percent excess rainfall in Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha in 24 hours. The surge swelled the south-bank tributaries of the Brahmaputra — Dikhou, Disang and Dhansiri — inundating districts that rarely see such floods.
In Arunachal Pradesh, flash floods and landslides have left three dead and two missing, officials said. At least 128 households have been affected and 60 people displaced to a relief camp at the NEEPCO campus. Twelve districts including Keyi Panyor, Papum Pare and Lower Subansiri are hit, with seven districts cut off after blockages on the Hoj-Potin highway.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms from July 30 to August 1 in Assam, Arunachal and Nagaland, warning that fresh rain could hamper relief operations in Tinsukia, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur.
Amid the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met five MPs from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland at Parliament House, led by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. The delegation included Tapir Gao, Tai Tagak from Arunachal and S. Supongmeren Jamir and S. Phangnon Konyak from Nagaland.
After the meeting, Modi posted on X, “We talked about the situation in these states in the wake of floods there. The Central Government will keep working with the respective state Governments to address the challenges.” Rijiju said the Prime Minister assured full assistance and has given directions for timely relief, restoration and support.
The meeting followed a similar review on July 28 with Assam MPs, where the Prime Minister suggested adopting a standardised relief kit model on the lines of Gujarat’s disaster management framework and assured close coordination with the state government for rehabilitation.
