Songpi, July 30, 2026: In a proud moment for the Kuki community and the Northeast, senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Ngulkham Jathom Gangte has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Mexico. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced his appointment on Tuesday, July 29, 2026.
Gangte, who belongs to the Kuki community, is an IFS officer of the 1994 batch and is currently serving as Special Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. He is expected to take up his new assignment at the Indian Embassy in Mexico City shortly.
A seasoned diplomat with over three decades of distinguished service, Gangte has represented India across four continents. His key overseas postings include Cairo in Egypt, Rabat in Morocco, Dublin in Ireland, Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania, and Chicago in the United States, handling bilateral relations, trade and diaspora affairs.
The MEA stated that as Ambassador to Mexico, Gangte will lead India’s diplomatic mission and work to further strengthen India-Mexico relations. His focus will be on deepening cooperation in trade and investment, technology, culture and people-to-people ties.
The Indian Embassy in Mexico has welcomed the appointment, stating that his rich experience and diplomatic acumen will give new momentum to the India-Mexico strategic partnership. Mexico is one of India’s most important partners in Latin America.
The news has sparked celebration across Manipur and the Kuki community worldwide. Gangte is among the senior-most diplomats from the Kuki community and the Northeast to be appointed to such a high-profile ambassadorial post in North America, inspiring many young aspirants from the region.
India and Mexico share warm and friendly relations rooted in shared democratic values and strong multilateral cooperation. Both nations have been collaborating closely at the United Nations, G20 and other global forums to enhance economic and cultural linkages.
