Guwahati, Aug 1, 2026: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Saturday, but nearly 1.93 lakh people remained affected across five districts, while two more deaths pushed the death toll in this year’s flood season to 82, officials said.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin on Saturday morning, 1,92,799 people are still impacted by floods in Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Charaideo districts. This marks a slight improvement from Thursday when over two lakh people in eight districts were affected.
Sivasagar and Golaghat are reported to be the worst-affected districts, with vast tracts of paddy fields, roads and houses still under water. Officials said river levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are receding slowly, but many low-lying areas continue to remain inundated.
The Assam government on Friday announced a package of relief measures for flood-hit families. The measures include directing insurance companies to fast-track settlement of claims for damaged vehicles, livestock and property, and requesting non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and banks to grant temporary moratorium on loan repayments to affected borrowers.
On the ground, relief and rescue operations continue with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services and district administrations deployed in the affected areas. Relief camps have been set up with food, drinking water and medicines being distributed.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted moderate rainfall in upper Assam in the next 24 hours, but officials are hopeful that the overall situation will improve further if water levels continue to fall. Authorities have urged people in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow safety advisories.
The seasonal floods have caused extensive damage to agriculture and infrastructure across the state this year. The government said a detailed damage assessment will be carried out once water fully recedes, and compensation will be processed for affected farmers and families.
