New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University has dismissed Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from service with immediate effect following a sexual harassment inquiry. The official order No. ACAD.I/SSS/ dated 09.10.2026 was issued by the university administration and signed by Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, confirming major disciplinary action against the faculty member.

According to the order, the inquiry was conducted by the Internal Committee (IC) against Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam (Emp. I.D. 875) of Centre for the Study of Social Systems (CSSS), School of Social Sciences (SSS), pursuant to allegations of sexual harassment. The order states that the Internal Committee had conducted a detailed investigation into the complaints received against the professor.

Based on the findings, the Internal Committee recommended Major Punishment to Prof. Akoijam as per service rules [(UGC Ref. No. F.91-1/2013 (TFGS)/10(1)] and by invoking Rule 11(ix) of Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules. The university noted that the punishment was imposed after following due process and considering all available facts as per the report of the Internal Committee.

The order reads, “Upon following the due process and considering all available facts and as per the report of the Internal Committee (IC), the punishment of dismissal from the services of the University is hereby imposed on Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences of the University, with immediate effect.” The order was marked to the professor at House No. 1337, Type-V, Poorvanchal Complex Old, JNU Campus, New Delhi – 110067.

Earlier reports stated that the allegations were made by 11 female students, prompting the university to refer the matter to its Internal Committee. The Internal Committee is the statutory body mandated under UGC regulations to examine sexual harassment complaints at workplace in higher educational institutions, and its recommendations are binding after approval by the executive authority.

The termination under Rule 11(ix) of CCS (CCA) Rules denotes dismissal from service, which is considered a major penalty. JNU’s action follows the UGC guidelines on prevention, prohibition and redressal of sexual harassment. The university administration has not released further details of the inquiry report, maintaining confidentiality of the complainants and the proceedings as per norms.
