Ukhrul, July 27, 2026: The Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul (WCKCSOs-Ukhrul) has accused the Manipur Police, particularly the Ukhrul Police, of forfeiting public confidence and discarding professionalism, neutrality and integrity.
In a statement No. WC/PR70/07/26 dated 26/07/2026 titled “Questions Buried Beneath the Narrative”, issued by its Department of Information and Media, the committee alleged partisan handling of the ongoing communal conflict and said that with every escalation, the police seemed determined to redefine selective policing.
Litan Sareikhong Allegations
The committee alleged that Litan Sareikhong Police looked the other way as outsiders occupied the vicinity of Litan Sareikhong, violating the first agreement signed between TNL-WC and WCKCSOs-Ukhrul on 14 February 2026. It further alleged that police stood by while bunkers were erected and used for months to terrorise Mongkot Chepu.
According to the statement, repeated representations by Kuki CSOs were met with the reply that “Tangkhul mobs prevented us from acting.” The committee questioned whether the writ of the State expires where mob pressure begins.
June 19 Incident
On the June 19 incident, the committee stated that a few agitated youths intercepting vehicles towards Ukhrul in protest against what it described as a prolonged and selective economic blockade on the Kuki people was rebranded by sections of the media as a “kidnapping.”
It said the Officer-in-Charge of Litan Police was hailed as the “Singham-the Supercop of Ukhrul” for rescuing hostages from an incident that never occurred. The statement termed it ironic that Manipur Police amplified the unverified narrative on its official platform.
The committee asked: If Ukhrul truly has its own Supercop, why has a conflict within the district persisted for six months?
Dispute Over Arms Recovery
On the latest widely publicised cache of recovered arms, the committee claimed village authorities of Thowai Kuki, Shangkai and Mongkot Chepu recognise only a fraction of what police claimed.
As per the statement, Thowai identifies just one single-barrel gun, Shangkai says no operation took place on 25/07/2026, and Mongkot Chepu acknowledges only nine live rounds and a homemade mortar shell.
The committee questioned the source of the second single-barrel rifle, pistol, ammunition pouch, additional live rounds, Pumpi and 12-bore rifle shown in the recovery.
The statement concluded that whether the recoveries reflect exemplary policing or imaginative accounting will be judged by the public against six months of alleged selective enforcement and economic blockade on the Kuki minority, adding that credibility is earned through consistency, not headlines.
