Haflong, July 26, 2026: Fearing spillover of Manipur violence into Assam’s hill district, two major tribal bodies of Dima Hasao have made a joint peace appeal.
The Kuki Inpi Assam (KIA) and Zeme Council Assam (ZCA) in their joint press note on Saturday said Dima Hasao must not be allowed to burn because of what is happening in neighbouring Manipur.
“Our district has a history of living together. That history must not be broken by anger or rumours,” the joint statement said.
The bodies said while they understand the pain and anxiety among Kuki and Zeme people due to the Manipur crisis, retaliation or hate against any community living in Dima Hasao will only bring more suffering.
They urged village authorities, student bodies and church leaders to guide youths and to stop forwarding unverified videos, photos and hate speeches on social media which are trying to polarize communities.
“Do not believe everything you see on Facebook and WhatsApp. Verify before you share,” the appeal said.
The organisations also warned that some elements may try to use the Manipur situation for political gain in Dima Hasao and create law and order problems.
Both KIA and ZCA reaffirmed their commitment to stand together for peace and appealed to the district administration and police to remain vigilant and take strict action against rumour mongers.
They concluded that peace is the only path forward and Dima Hasao should remain an example of unity for the entire Northeast.
