Mizoram has been battered by heavy rains, windstorms, and landslides over the past two days, leaving widespread damage across four districts, the state Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department said. At least 77 houses were affected between Monday and Tuesday, with four completely destroyed. Community infrastructure also took a hit, with two schools, two church halls, two health sub-centres, an Anganwadi centre, and a public library sustaining damage.

Aizawl district recorded the highest impact with 39 houses damaged, all caused by windstorms. Lunglei district in southern Mizoram reported 31 houses hit by windstorms and landslides, along with damage to schools, church halls, health centres, and a library. Siaha district saw three houses and one school damaged, while Kolasib district, bordering Assam, reported four houses affected. Officials confirmed that no casualties have been reported despite the extensive destruction.

Schools across nine districts, including Aizawl, Kolasib, Lunglei, and Mamit, remained closed on Tuesday as heavy rainfall continued to lash the state. India Meteorological Department data showed Aizawl received the highest rainfall at 57.8 mm on Tuesday, followed by Mamit with 47.5 mm, Khawzawl with 35.5 mm, and Serchhip with 34.5 mm.

The IMD forecast warns of heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next three days in Aizawl, Kolasib, Mamit, Champhai, and Serchhip districts. Gusty winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph are expected in Kolasib on Wednesday and in Aizawl on Thursday, prompting advisories for residents to secure property and avoid vulnerable areas.

State authorities said disaster response teams are assessing damage and assisting affected families, with priority on restoring access to damaged schools and health facilities. Residents have been urged to follow official weather updates and avoid spreading unverified alerts, as further rain and strong winds could worsen conditions in the coming days.
