The streets of border town Moreh were filled Friday as thousands of Kuki residents staged a unified demonstration against targeted violence and ongoing civilian detentions.
The rally was triggered by the May 13 ambush that killed multiple Kuki pastors and church leaders, and by the continued detention of 14 Kukπ civilians allegedly held by Naga CSOs in Senapati District.
Organized by a coalition of Tengnoupal District CSOs, the march drew members from village authorities, local churches, womenβs groups, and youth organizations. The procession began at Galngam Lentol and moved through Morehβs commercial hub, with participants holding banners demanding accountability and carrying photographs of the deceased church leaders.
βToday we mourn, but we also demand action,β said one community representative addressing the crowd. βThe killing of men of God cannot be ignored. The 14 civilians must come home.β
Protesters chanted calls for justice and urged state and central agencies to launch a transparent probe into the May 13 killings. They also appealed directly to the authorities and Naga CSOs to secure the immediate, unconditional release of the detained civilians.
Speakers at the gathering stressed that the community seeks redress through constitutional means. They condemned the cycle of violence, demanded protection of fundamental rights, and pressed the government to ensure security for vulnerable populations in border areas.
The rally dispersed peacefully in the afternoon. Organizers reaffirmed their resolve to pursue justice through democratic channels and appealed for sustained attention from law enforcement and human rights bodies.
