Songpi: May 12, 2026Molnoi, a Kuki village along the Indo-Myanmar border, was allegedly burnt down on Monday, 12 May 2026, at around 2:30 PM, according to preliminary reports from the area. Local sources said the attack was carried out by suspected Myanmar-based Tangkhul (Kacha-Naga) militants belonging to the NSCN-Eastern Flank, along with a junta-sponsored militia group.

Initial accounts indicate that village guards were on patrol deep inside the surrounding jungle within their ancestral land when the assailants reportedly took advantage of their absence. The attackers allegedly opened fire with automatic assault rifles before setting houses on fire. Residents, mostly women, children, and the elderly, are said to have fled into the forest fearing for their lives.
There were no reports of human casualties at the time of filing. The incident has further escalated tensions between communities living along the Indo-Myanmar border line. Security forces had not issued an official statement on the Molnoi incident when this report was filed.
Community representatives noted that similar incidents have been reported in recent weeks. Lanchah Kuki village in Kamjong District was allegedly burnt down on 2 May 2026, while Mullam Kuki village in Ukhrul district was reportedly set on fire on 24 April 2026. These accounts attribute the attacks to Tangkhul militant groups.
Local sources also claim that violence involving Tangkhul militants began in February 2026 in Litan village under Ukhrul district, where 30-40 Kuki houses were allegedly torched. Since then, reports of attacks on Kuki villages have continued, with community organisations expressing concern over signs of further escalation. Independent verification of the incidents is pending.
