The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) has issued its strongest condemnation of what it called a “barbaric and premeditated” attack on Mulam Kuki Village in the Songphel-Mulam area of Ukhrul District, allegedly carried out by Tangkhul terrorists in the early hours of Thursday. The apex Kuki body said the assault began with gunfire at 1:00 AM and escalated into a coordinated armed attack at 5:30 AM, when heavily armed assailants descended upon the civilian settlement.

KIM confirmed that two villagers, (L) Letlal, 43, and (L) Paominlun Haolai, 19, were killed while defending Mulam from the incursion. At least 17 houses were burnt down during the attack, leaving many injured and displaced, including women and children. The organisation said the incident underscores the grave threat to unarmed Kuki civilians and exposes the lack of security in vulnerable border areas adjoining Ukhrul.

Calling for urgent government intervention, KIM demanded the immediate large-scale deployment of Central Security Forces in Mulam and surrounding Kuki areas. It also sought permanent security outposts and strict monitoring mechanisms in vulnerable regions to prevent further attacks. KIM pressed for time-bound identification, arrest, and prosecution of all perpetrators, along with full compensation, rehabilitation, and medical assistance for victims whose homes were destroyed.

In its statement, KIM said repeated incidents and provocations have tested Kuki restraint, but continued inaction from authorities risks further deterioration. “Continued attacks of this nature and subsequent inaction from concerned authorities may lead to further deterioration of the situation and increased risks to innocent lives for which the Kuki Inpi Manipur shall not take any responsibility,” the press release stated. The body stressed that immediate steps are essential to restore confidence and uphold the rule of law.

Addressing the Kuki community, KIM called for vigilance and resilience against threats to “land, identity and our very existence.” The statement added, “Come what may, the Kuki people will not surrender our glorious past. We will stand united and resolute, and we will defend our land and our people from any threat as rightfully guaranteed under the Constitution of India.”

KIM noted that the Kuki people have exercised restraint despite repeated attacks in the interest of maintaining peace and preventing escalation between communities. However, it warned that terror attacks and state inefficiencies have inflicted “untold miseries” on the Kuki people, making decisive action unavoidable. The safety of civilians, it said, cannot be compromised any longer.

The press release, signed by Janghaolun Haokip, Secretary of Information & Publicity, concluded with tributes to the deceased: “May the bravehearts rest in eternal peace.” The Mulam attack has intensified calls for central intervention amid ongoing violence and ceasefire violations in Manipur’s hill districts.
