Kangpokpi, July 28, 2026: The Kuki Human Rights Council (KHRC) has strongly condemned the alleged illegal and unconstitutional economic blockade imposed by Naga groups backed by NSCN-IM militants on Kuki-inhabited areas of Kangpokpi, Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
In a press statement issued on Monday (Ref. No. KHRC/PR-07/2026), the Council termed the blockade as a “deliberate attempt to choke the lifeline of an entire community” which is unlawful and morally indefensible.
According to the KHRC, the blockade has persisted for more than 70 days since May 2026, leading to a calculated denial of food, medicines and other essential commodities to the Kuki civilian population.
“Such an act amounts to collective punishment, violates Article 21 of the Constitution of India, and constitutes a crime against humanity under international humanitarian law,” the statement said.
The Council further asserted that the law and order machinery has completely collapsed in the three districts and alleged that National Highways and public movement are under the unlawful control of NSCN-IM militants.
“It is claimed that India is one of the superpowers of the world, yet its failure to clear a national highway blockade enforced by NSCN-IM militants for over two months is a matter of profound shame for the nation and its people,” the KHRC stated.
The KHRC has therefore demanded immediate intervention by the Government of India to lift the blockade, restore the rule of law, secure National Highway-2 and all connecting routes, ensure security escort for all trucks carrying essential commodities to Kuki areas, and prosecute those responsible for this humanitarian crime.
“Denial of food and medicine can never be justified,” the Council added.
