Kanggui: The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) Sadar Hills, Twilang Block has strongly condemned the barbaric and inhuman attack on an ambulance carrying doctors and essential medicines at Chawangkining Liangmei Naga village on August 27, 2026.
According to the press statement issued by KSO Twilang Block, the ambulance was on its way to PHC Tujang Vaichong in Kangpokpi district when miscreants waylaid it at Chawangkining, assaulted and threatened the medical personnel inside, and burnt down the entire stock of medicines meant for the health centre.
The incident reportedly occurred around 2:30 PM on Wednesday when a medical team from Kangpokpi District Headquarters, comprising doctors and lab technicians, was traveling under CRPF escort with three ambulances to provide essential services at PHC T. Waichong. Health department officials said the convoy was stopped by a large mob, who smashed the ambulances and removed medicines worth lakhs of rupees before setting them on fire.
At least three medical personnel, including Dr. Pumzamang Shoute, sustained injuries in the attack. Dr. Shoute received facial injuries from shattered windshield glass after a miscreant allegedly climbed onto the ambulance bonnet and smashed it with a large stone. All three ambulances were vandalised with broken glass panes.
Condemning the act, KSO Twilang Block said it is an attack on humanity because an ambulance carrying doctors has protected status even in armed conflicts under International Humanitarian Law and Geneva Conventions, and attacking it is a grave crime against humanity.
The organisation further said it is an attack on the Right to Life, as by burning medicines and stopping doctors, the attackers have endangered the lives of hundreds of innocent villagers, including pregnant women, children and the elderly who depend on PHC Vaichong. It is also an attack on peace, as doctors are neutral peace ambassadors and targeting them creates fear in an already vulnerable area.
Following the incident, doctors, nurses and healthcare workers of Kangpokpi District Hospital staged a protest on August 29 wearing black badges, demanding security for medical personnel in conflict-sensitive areas. They carried placards that read “Protect Medics, Protect Humanity” and “Burning of Medicines is Burning of Human Life.”
In its press statement, KSO Twilang Block demanded that the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Kangpokpi take suo-motu cognizance, register an FIR and arrest the perpetrators at the earliest, and urged the State Government and Health Department to immediately restore medical supplies at PHC Tujang Vaichong and ensure security of medical transport.
The organisation said Twilang area is a peaceful area and targeting its health lifeline is an attempt to collectively punish innocent civilians. It appealed to all sections not to target medical services under any circumstances and said it remains committed to peace but will pursue all democratic and legal means to ensure justice.
