Chepu Yaolen village in Ukhrul district came under indiscriminate firing on Friday afternoon, in what the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, described as a “brazen and unprovoked broad daylight attack.” The incident occurred at around 12:30 PM, with gunfire reportedly directed at the Kuki village from Tangkhul-dominated New Heaven along NH-202. The committee said the assault caused widespread panic and posed an imminent threat to civilians, particularly women and children.

According to the statement, the latest attack follows a failed attempt on April 28, 2026, to infiltrate Chepu Yaolen through forest and agricultural zones via the Ringui–Tongou–Sirarikhong corridor. After that attempt was repelled, the aggressors allegedly shifted their offensive to target residential areas directly from New Heaven. The CSO noted that repeated warnings about the village’s vulnerability had gone unaddressed, reflecting what it called systemic neglect of security needs.
The committee raised serious concerns about the conduct of Litan Police Station personnel, alleging complicity in the incident. It claimed that attackers were aided with weapons and ammunition, and that photographic evidence showed police personnel present at New Heaven before the assault began. The statement further cited damage to a motorable road near a suspension bridge by TM Kasom villagers, which it said had effectively isolated Chepu Yaolen during a time of acute distress.
In response, the Kuki CSO Working Committee has issued two urgent demands to the government. It called for the immediate removal of Tangkhul personnel from Litan Police Station and for the deployment of at least one company of Assam Rifles to secure Chepu Yaolen and adjoining vulnerable habitations. The group said such steps were necessary to prevent further escalation and protect residents.
The CSO warned that continued inaction in the face of repeated aggression would amount to a failure of the state’s fundamental duty to safeguard citizens. “If the government is either incapable or unwilling to discharge its obligation, it must come clean and declare so without equivocation,” the statement said. The Department of Information and Media, WCKCSOs-Ukhrul, issued the press release.
