A Bailey bridge spanning the Tuivai river in Churachandpur district collapsed on Thursday evening, severing a key supply line and forcing authorities to reroute traffic. The structure, located between Sinzawl and Khuanggin villages under Thanlon area, gave way as two trucks loaded with cement were crossing. Officials confirmed no casualties were reported in the incident, which occurred more than three hours by road from Churachandpur town.

The bridge serves as a critical connector for essential commodities entering Churachandpur from Silchar in Assam and other regions through Mizoram. Its collapse has temporarily halted vehicular movement along the stretch, according to the office of the Churachandpur deputy commissioner. The disruption is expected to impact supply schedules for food, fuel, and construction materials in the district.
In response, the district administration has directed the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd to restore connectivity on a war footing. NHIDCL officials said immediate measures have begun for procurement and installation of a replacement Bailey bridge. “Restoration work is being carried out on priority to ensure early resumption of normal traffic movement,” the deputy commissioner’s office stated in a press release issued Friday.
For the interim, all vehicular traffic has been diverted via the Sinzawl–Dialkhai–Churachandpur route through NH-02. Commuters have been advised to use the alternative route and follow traffic advisories issued by authorities. Officials noted that the detour adds considerable travel time but remains the safest option until the bridge is rebuilt.
The district administration assured that all necessary steps are being taken to restore connectivity at the earliest. “The cooperation of the public in ensuring smooth traffic management and safety are sincerely appreciated,” the statement added. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as repair teams mobilise equipment to the site.
