By: Kukiland Express Staff ReporterSongpi: April 21, 2026Tension escalated in Mongkot Chepu on Sunday evening after a single round of gunfire pierced the residence of the village chief during an ongoing Village Authority meeting, prompting sharp condemnation and renewed calls for the removal of Litan Police Station. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM on April 20, 2026, while members of the Mongkot Chepu Village Authority were gathered in the durbar hall of the chief’s house. According to a statement released by the Village Authority, the bullet is believed to have been fired from the vicinity of Litan Police Station. It struck the window of the hall, penetrated through, and hit the opposite wall, creating what the Authority described as a “direct and life-threatening danger” to all present. The Village Authority stressed that Sunday’s firing was not an isolated case. The statement detailed repeated instances of bullets originating from the area of Litan Police Station and hitting residential zones in Mongkot Chepu, raising urgent questions about public safety and the conduct of local policing. “There have been repeated instances of bullets fired from the vicinity of Litan Police Station striking residential areas,” the Authority said, adding that the pattern has severely undermined community trust. The incident has intensified fear among residents who say civilian spaces are increasingly vulnerable during what should be routine village proceedings. In its statement, the Mongkot Chepu Village Authority also voiced deep concern over reports of Tangkhul militant elements allegedly operating in the area. It urged Litan Police to act with “full integrity, neutrality, and transparency,” demanding immediate and impartial measures to ensure no unlawful groups are allowed to function or receive protection. The Authority said the recurrence of gunfire incidents, combined with suspicions of militant presence, reflects a breakdown of security that local police have failed to address. It called for accountability and decisive policing that prioritizes civilian safety over political or group interests.Citing the grave nature of the attack and the pattern of threats, the Village Authority has demanded the removal of Litan Police Station “in its current form” and the deployment of central security forces to Mongkot Chepu. The body argued that only neutral central forces could restore confidence and prevent further risk to civilians. Alongside the demand for redeployment, it pressed for a thorough and transparent investigation into Sunday’s firing, urging higher authorities to act swiftly to prevent any recurrence. The statement made clear that residents view the current security arrangement as inadequate and compromised. The Authority concluded with a stark warning directed at the government. “The government shall be held responsible for any retaliation imposed on us — retaliation for defence,” the statement read, signaling that the community may take protective measures if state security continues to fail. The incident has deepened the security crisis in the area, with villagers demanding structural changes to policing and assurances that civilian spaces will no longer be exposed to crossfire. As of Sunday night, no official response from state police or district administration had been reported.Edited By: Nemgcha HaokipCopyright ©2026 Kukiland Express – All Rights Reserved.
