Songpi: The Kuki Organization for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) has strongly condemned what it described as coordinated attacks in three locations in Manipur — Chassad in Kamjong District, Yaolen in Ukhrul District, and along the IT Road in Kangpokpi District — allegedly involving Tangkhul and Liangmei elements associated with the NSCN-IM.
According to the condemnation statement dated October 10, 2026, issued by its Department of Information and Publicity, the attacks resulted in the deaths of Mrs. Domkhonei Touthang and Mr. Michael Ngamminlen Haokip, both residents of Chassad village. Several houses were also reportedly burnt during the violence. KOHUR expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and said it stands in solidarity with the affected community.
KOHUR, which holds UN Special Consultative Status since 2016 and is registered under the Indian Registration Act, 1908, described the situation as grave and escalating. The organization said civilians in border villages continue to remain vulnerable as armed groups move freely despite ceasefire agreements with the Government of India.
In its statement, KOHUR urged the Government of India and security agencies to take immediate preventive measures to protect civilians and secure vulnerable areas. It called for deployment of adequate security forces in Chassad, Yaolen, and IT Road areas, where Kuki villages are located close to areas dominated by Naga armed groups.
The rights body also demanded an impartial investigation into the killings and arson, and urged authorities to bring those responsible to justice. It said failure to investigate previous incidents involving Kuki civilians since the 1990s has created a culture of impunity, where perpetrators continue to attack without fear of legal action.
KOHUR warned that failure to act promptly could result in further loss of innocent lives and destruction of property. It said all concerned authorities must act decisively to prevent further violence and uphold the fundamental rights, safety, and dignity of every civilian in the region.
The organization further appealed to the Government to apply the law equally to all armed groups in Manipur. It said while Kuki village volunteers and SoO groups are confined and prosecuted, other groups under ceasefire continue to operate with arms, leading to repeated clashes. Ensuring equal enforcement of ground rules is essential to restore peace and prevent another cycle of violence in the hill districts.
