Kanggui: The Office of the Kuki Village Volunteer, Twilang Lhang, has alleged that Kuki Village Volunteers guarding their village near Asang Makui were attacked early this morning by cadres of NSCN-IM and Liangmei Village Guard (LVG). In a press release bearing Ref No. TAKZVV/02/01/02-2026 dated 10-10-2026 and issued by Info & Publicity, the organization said the attack occurred at approximately 4:00 AM on October 10, 2026.
According to the release, the Kuki Village Volunteers were on routine duty to safeguard their village and protect innocent civilians when the alleged attack was launched. The Volunteers claimed that NSCN-IM and LVG launched an unprovoked attack on their position, leaving them with no alternative but to retaliate in defence of their village and its residents. The release stated that under the circumstances, the volunteers were compelled to use force to repel the alleged attackers.
The Twilang Lhang unit said the attack reportedly resulted in significant casualties on their side, with several Kuki Village Volunteers sustaining serious injuries while defending the village. As the situation unfolded, NSCN-IM and LVG personnel reportedly advanced towards the Kuki village, prompting the Kuki Village Volunteers to respond defensively against the advancing personnel. The volunteers maintained that their action was purely defensive and aimed at preventing civilian harm.
Consequently, the press note claimed, two to three cadres allegedly belonging to the LVG/NSCN-IM were reportedly found dead following the exchange of fire. The Kuki Village Volunteers did not disclose the identities of the deceased or the condition of the injured volunteers, but stated that the situation was brought under control after the retaliatory action. The area near Asang Makui has remained tense following the early morning gunfight.
The Kuki Village Volunteers urged the concerned authorities to intervene immediately, investigate the incident, and take appropriate measures to prevent further escalation and division among communities. The organization said authorities must act responsibly and ensure that such incidents do not recur, warning that any further untoward incidents resulting from a failure to take timely and appropriate action would raise serious concerns regarding the responsibility of the concerned authorities.
The volunteers reiterated that they were guarding their own villages to protect civilians and would continue to defend their villages if attacked. They appealed for impartial intervention by security forces and administration to maintain peace and prevent armed groups from targeting Kuki villages in the region.
