Kuki civil society organisations in Churachandpur have extended full support to a shutdown called in honour of late MLA Pu Vungzagin Valte and other victims of the ongoing Kuki-Meitei conflict. The shutdown, announced in solidarity with an appeal by Zomi civil society bodies, aims to reiterate the Kuki demand for a political solution, according to a press statement issued on Monday. The statement described the conflict that began on May 3, 2023, as a “grave humanitarian and constitutional crisis.” It claimed the Kuki community has lost over 200 lives, seen hundreds of villages destroyed, and continues to face large-scale displacement. The CSOs said justice and accountability remain elusive despite the scale of violence.Expressing “deep anguish” over the demise of Pu Vungzagin Valte, the press note said the Hon’ble MLA succumbed to prolonged injuries sustained after an attack by “Meitei extremist mobs.” The statement called the assault on a sitting legislator an affront to democratic institutions and demanded a time-bound, impartial investigation and swift prosecution of those responsible in this case and other incidents.
The Kuki CSOs reiterated that the demand for Separate Administration in the form of a Union Territory with Legislature is rooted in the State’s constitutional obligation to ensure security, equality, and effective governance. The statement argued that continued failure to protect life and property has made a political solution urgent, noting that late Pu Vungzagin Valte, in his final appeal to the Prime Minister, had called for expediting political dialogue with the KNO and UPF.
Signatories to the statement include the Kuki Inpi Churachandpur (KIC), Kuki Chiefs’ Association (KCA), Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi (KKL), Kuki Women Union (KWU), Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR), and Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO). The groups said the shutdown is also being observed in honour of all martyrs from the conflict. The press statement urged the Government of India to deliver justice, ensure accountability, and urgently initiate a political process toward granting Union Territory status with Legislature. It also appealed to all citizens to observe the shutdown in a peaceful and lawful manner.
