The Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex body of Kuki communities, has issued a strong clarification on Wednesday regarding allegations tied to recent developments in S. Changoubung Village, Kangpokpi district, amid the ongoing shutdown imposed by the United Naga Council. The body said its position is grounded in “factual occurrences on the ground” and sought to set the record straight as tensions persist in the area.
In its statement, the Kuki Inpi raised concerns over what it described as unauthorised entry into the jurisdiction of S. Changoubung Kuki Village during the UNC bandh. It alleged obstruction of public movement and attempts to coerce residents and shopkeepers, adding that there were instances of verbal and physical abuse. The apex body stressed that these actions prompted its response and cannot be overlooked in any fair assessment of the situation.
Rejecting counter-narratives circulating in public discourse, the Kuki Inpi termed allegations that the community had disrespected the dead, hurt Naga sentiments, or intentionally provoked violence as “unfounded.” It called such claims a “grave distortion of facts” that are totally unacceptable. The statement underscored that the Kuki community respects the traditions and sensitivities of other tribal communities and has no intention of escalating tensions.
The apex body reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights, safety, and dignity of all residents within their respective areas. Describing the current situation as critical, it cautioned that the spread of unverified or inflammatory information risks deepening divisions and undermining fragile peace efforts in Kangpokpi and adjoining districts.
Kuki Inpi Manipur appealed to civil society leaders, community representatives, and authorities to exercise restraint in both words and actions and to prioritise dialogue rooted in truth and mutual understanding. It stressed that collective efforts are essential to maintain harmony, prevent further misunderstandings, and ensure that local disputes are not exploited to widen inter-community rifts.
