Kuki Inpi South-West Sadar Hills Opposes New Road Through Its Land, Demands Halt in 3 Days

Sadar Hills: The Kuki Inpi, South-West Sadar Hills (KI-SWSH), the apex body of Kuki tribes in the region, has registered strong objection and total disapproval against the alleged construction of a separate road route by inhabitants of Konsa village passing through its land, reportedly with government assistance, while bypassing the existing public thoroughfare.

In a press statement issued by the Department of Information & Publicity, the organization stated that in light of prevailing ethnic sensitivities in the region, where even the smallest provocation could trigger large-scale violence and disruption, it is compelled to outline its firm stance to prevent any untoward escalation and to maintain peace and public order.

The Kuki Inpi has demanded that the construction of the newly built road be completely halted within three days. The body warned that failing to comply with the demand, widespread public agitation will ensue across the region. It stated that any unilateral construction activity through its customary land without consent cannot be accepted under the present sensitive circumstances.

Justifying its demand, the Kuki Inpi asserted that the existing public thoroughfare remains fully accessible, functional, and unimpeded for ordinary commute and daily transit without any restriction. According to the organization, there is no justification for constructing an alternate road by bypassing the established route, especially when the existing road serves the purpose of public movement.

On the issue of transport and burial of deceased persons, the organization reaffirmed its guarantee that the passage of mortal remains along public roads remains completely unrestricted. However, it urged that the six deceased individuals be transported via the existing public road to their designated village cemetery. It clearly stated that any attempt to conduct burials on its land must be strictly prohibited to maintain genuine peace and public order.

The Kuki Inpi further urged the State Government and District Administration to intervene with total impartiality, prudence, and foresight. The organization said the administration must take note of the gravity of the situation and act promptly to halt the ongoing construction and regulate movement as per established norms.

The statement concluded with a warning that if the situation deteriorates due to administrative inaction or oversight, full responsibility for any untoward incidents will rest entirely with the District Administration and the State Government.
