Ngamsom Baite, 50, freed from Gate No. 1 area after alleged militant abduction; probe on to identify group behind incident

Moreh, June 19, 2026: Security forces rescued Ngamsom Baite, a 50-year-old Kuki man from B. Bongjang Village, Moreh, after he was allegedly abducted by suspected cadres of a proscribed militant outfit. The operation on Thursday brought relief to his family and residents of Tengnoupal district.
According to officials, the Kuki man was allegedly taken from his village early Thursday morning, prompting immediate action by security agencies in the border town. The abduction raised concern among locals given ongoing security tensions in the area.
Acting on specific intelligence, personnel launched a search in and around Moreh. The team located Baite in the Gate No. 1 area under Moreh Police Station limits. Officials said he was recovered without any reported injuries.
After the rescue, security forces provided necessary assistance before handing the Kuki man over to his family. Relatives confirmed he was unharmed and thanked officials for the swift response.
Police have opened an investigation to ascertain the circumstances of the abduction and to identify those responsible. Officials said determining the motive behind targeting the Kuki villager remains a priority.
Moreh, a key town on the India–Myanmar border, has seen increased security deployment in recent months. Authorities said the rescue reflects ongoing efforts to protect civilians and counter insurgent activities in sensitive border areas.
