The Manipur violence 2026 displacement crisis has affected over 58,800 people and caused 217 deaths, according to official government data released recently.
A total of 58,821 people have been displaced by the ethnic violence in Manipur between May 3, 2023 and March 30, 2026, according to data released by the Home Department Secretariat on April 20. The figures were provided in response to an RTI application filed by Manipur Congress leader Hareshwar Goshwami, who said it took him seven months of effort to obtain the information on internally displaced persons (IDPs). The department stated that as of March 10, 2026, a total of 174 relief camps remain operational across the state to house those uprooted by the conflict.
On casualties, the Home Department said 217 people have been confirmed dead, based on ex-gratia payments given to the next of kin of victims. The violence, which erupted in May 2023 between the valley-based Meitei community and the Kuki people in the hill districts, has also left widespread destruction of property. Government data shows 7,894 permanent houses were completely destroyed since the conflict began, while another 2,646 houses were partially damaged.
To address housing needs for the displaced, the state said 3,000 pre-fabricated houses have been constructed so far by the Manipur Police Housing Corporation Ltd. However, the scale of destruction and displacement continues to strain relief efforts nearly three years into the crisis. With 174 camps still running and tens of thousands unable to return home, rehabilitation remains a major challenge for both state and central authorities.
The RTI reply offers one of the most comprehensive official accounts of the humanitarian toll of the Manipur conflict to date. As the situation in several parts of the state remains tense amid recurring shutdowns and sporadic incidents, calls for lasting political dialogue and secure resettlement of IDPs have grown louder from civil society groups and affected communities.
