Songpi/Aizawl, Aug 4, 2026: In an era where politics is often associated with power and personal gain, a legislator from Mizoram has set a rare example of honesty, compassion and true public service.
Robert Romawia Royte, MLA and former Cabinet Minister in the Government of Mizoram, has donated his entire salary for the last 7.5 years for the welfare of the poor and needy.
For 90 months continuously – from December 2018 to June 2026 – Royte did not take a single rupee from his government salary. Instead, he transferred a total of Rs 1.25 Crore to a charitable organisation managed with full transparency and accountability.
According to an official statement issued by his office, this period includes 60 months as Cabinet Minister and 30 months as Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). Every rupee spent has been properly documented and audited.
The funds have been used to help poor and destitute families across Mizoram, financially weak students for education and fees, local churches and community organisations, NGOs and various village welfare initiatives, and medical assistance for needy patients.
The statement confirmed that proper records have been maintained for every expenditure, ensuring the money was used exclusively for charitable and welfare purposes.
Speaking about his decision, Royte recalled his pledge made before the 2018 Assembly elections.
“Just before the 2018 Assembly elections, I made two important decisions – to contest the election on an MNF ticket and, if elected, to donate my entire salary to the poor. I have fulfilled that promise, and I will continue to do so in the future,” Royte said.
Royte had contested and won the 2018 Mizoram Assembly election on a Mizo National Front (MNF) ticket. He served as a Cabinet Minister holding important portfolios including Sports & Youth Services, Tourism and Information & Communication Technology.
Apart from being a public representative, Royte is also a successful first-generation entrepreneur. He is the founder of North East Consultancy Services (NECS), Royte Fisheries and Royte Brick Industries. His financial independence has allowed him to dedicate his entire government earnings to philanthropy.
His act of selfless service is being compared to other global leaders known for similar gestures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as Chief Minister of Gujarat, had donated his accumulated savings for the education of daughters of Secretariat employees. Former US President Donald Trump and former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica also gave up their official salaries for public causes during their tenures.
Civil society leaders in Aizawl and Guwahati have hailed Royte’s initiative as an extraordinary source of inspiration not only for politicians but for every citizen.
