Sagaing: A major military operation by the Myanmar Army against a camp of Indian Naga insurgents in Myanmar has reportedly resulted in heavy casualties, though exact figures remain unconfirmed and vary widely across media and social media reports.

According to reports published by Nagaland-based media Nagaland Post and NKTV, and The Sangai Express on October 12, 2026, the Myanmar military struck a Naga insurgent camp in Homalin, a border town in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region which is believed to be a stronghold of Indian Naga insurgent groups. The attack reportedly took place on the night of October 11.

As per the reports, the operation began with drone strikes followed by aerial bombardment using military aircraft. The intensive attack reportedly led to the complete destruction of the camp. Images circulating from the site, credited to NKTV, show a damaged makeshift shelter and what appears to be debris of a drone or munition on the forest floor.

The casualty figure remains highly contested. While Nagaland Post and several security analysts, including Maj Digvijay Singh Rawat on X, reported that 36 militants were killed in the strike, other unverified local sources have claimed the toll could be as high as 52. In contrast, a few other media reports have downplayed the operation, claiming only 2 to 3 casualties. No independent verification of the death toll or the identities of those killed has been made available so far. Official confirmation from the Myanmar Army or the insurgent group is still awaited.

Homalin has long been considered an important strategic base for Naga insurgent groups operating across the porous India-Myanmar border. The area, with its dense forest and difficult-to-monitor terrain, has historically provided safe haven for armed groups. Security experts view that if the reported scale of the attack is confirmed, it could deal a significant blow to the organisational structure and operational capabilities of the group in the region.

The timing of the operation has triggered intense speculation. Reports note that the strike came shortly after a meeting between the Governments of India and Myanmar in Guwahati. This has led to questions on social media and in strategic circles whether the operation was part of coordinated border security and counter-insurgency discussions under India’s Act East Policy. As one strategic affairs post noted, “The Myanmar President’s visit, the Guwahati meeting, and the subsequent developments, was this strategic groundwork being laid all along?”

However, officials have not confirmed any direct link between the bilateral meeting and the military action. The India-Myanmar border region continues to face complex security challenges, and the reported strike in Homalin is being seen as a significant development. Further independent confirmation is required regarding the actual extent of damage, the precise circumstances of the operation, and any diplomatic coordination behind it.
