Chassad/Kamjong: The Kuki CSO Working Committee, Kamjong District, has announced the suspension of the ongoing economic blockade in the district with immediate effect, bringing temporary relief to the public after three days of disruption. The decision, as per an official press release issued by the Committee on Saturday, comes after direct intervention and assurance from the district administration regarding the grievances raised by the Kuki population residing in Kamjong. The blockade, which had been imposed from 12:00 PM of September 16, 2026, has now been lifted effective from 12:00 PM today, September 20, 2026.
According to the statement, the economic blockade was imposed only after the government failed to act upon a 36-hour ultimatum that had been served by the CSO Working Committee to the District Authority and the Government of Manipur. The ultimatum was related to several unresolved grievances faced by the Kuki population in the district, which, according to the Committee, have been long-pending and have caused significant hardship to the people. The Committee had stated that despite repeated appeals and representations in the past, no concrete action had been taken by the authorities, compelling them to resort to an economic blockade as a last measure to draw attention to their plight.
The press communiqué, issued under the letterhead of the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Kamjong District, bearing the motto ‘Together for a Better Tomorrow’, detailed the sequence of events leading to the suspension. It stated that after three days into the blockade, the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of Kamjong District reached out to the Committee. In the meeting, the district officials acknowledged all the hardships and issues raised by the Committee and assured that the government would take necessary steps to ensure the proper delivery and receipt of essential food supplies to the district. The officials reportedly stated that this was the maximum feasible action they could undertake from their end at this juncture.
The Committee said that considering the official assurances given by the highest district authorities, it has decided to give time to the administration to fulfill its promises and therefore has decided to lift the economic blockade. The statement read, “Now, in light of these official assurances, the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Kamjong District, has decided to lift the economic blockade effective from 12:00 PM today, September 20, 2026.” The Committee emphasized that the decision to suspend the blockade was taken in the larger public interest and to avoid further inconvenience to the general population, especially in view of the assurance that essential commodities would be made available without hindrance.
However, the suspension comes with a clear and strong warning. The Kuki CSO Working Committee has explicitly warned that if the district administration fails to fulfill its promises, it will be compelled to reimpose a significantly more stringent economic blockade. The economic blockade in Kamjong, a remote district bordering Myanmar, had significant implications as it affects the movement of essential goods and services. Kamjong District, which was carved out of Ukhrul district, is predominantly inhabited by the Kuki community and has been facing infrastructural and administrative challenges, particularly in the backdrop of the ongoing situation in Manipur. The grievances related to food supply, administrative neglect, and lack of essential services have been recurring issues raised by civil society organizations in the district. The latest action by the CSO Working Committee was seen as a culmination of that frustration.
The Kuki CSO Working Committee, Kamjong District, is an apex body of Kuki civil society organizations in the district working for the welfare of the community. The Committee has in the past also raised issues concerning security, development, and administrative outreach in the border areas. As of now, normal movement of goods and essential supplies is expected to resume in the district from this afternoon. The district administration has not yet issued a separate official statement, but sources indicate that arrangements for ensuring uninterrupted supply of essential food items are being made on priority. The public and local leaders have welcomed the decision to suspend the blockade, while also urging the government to address the root issues permanently to avoid recurrence of such agitations in the sensitive border district.
